2. Sun protection. If you can, try and stay indoors between 11am and 3pm. That’s when the sun’s rays are the strongest and can have an adverse effect on your skin. Also, don’t forget to apply that all-important sunscreen 30 minutes before you step out. If you’ve been out in the sun for a few hours, touch it up again so you’re well protected.

3. Use a toner. It’s important to keep your pores closed and skin cool by using a toner. Look for a brand that suits you or try rose water. Its natural cooling properties make it an excellent toner for the hot season.

4. Go for a water-based moisturiser. Don’t make the mistake of skipping the moisturising routine altogether as its essential for your skin to remain hydrated. However, if you find your regular moisturiser too oily, go for a water-based one.

5. Ditch those aerated drinks. Most people have the tendency to reach out for an ice cold aerated drink to quench their thirst on a really hot day. However, it’s important to remember that these drinks are full of sugar that is not good for your skin or your figure. Instead drink some water, fresh lime, fresh fruit juices, aam panna (green mango drink) or coconut water to stay hydrated. It’s also best to minimise the intake of diuretics like alcohol and caffeine as they reduce the water from your system.

6. Cleanse your face twice a day. At least! This is important to do even if you’ve been home all day and feel like your skin is clean. Cleansing and moisturising your skin before sleeping is an absolute must.

7. Exfoliate. More than the rest of the year, it’s really important to exfoliate your skin in the summer to remove dead skin and improve blood circulation to the face. Choose from any of the cosmetic scrubs available in the market or make one at home. Try this simple one using 4 to 5 tbsps of gram flour, a pinch of turmeric, 5 – 6 drops of rose water and milk or yoghurt. Mix it into a paste and use it to exfoliate your face. Follow it up with a facemask and moisturiser.

8. Don’t like your tan? Gram flour can also be used as a facemask to get rid of an uneven tan. Mix it with yoghurt and a few drops of lemon and apply and leave it on your face till it’s dry. The citrus properties of the lemon are very effective in removing the tan.

9. Get that warm, summer glow. Papaya is full of natural goodness and you can even use it as a homemade pack. Just mash 2 tbsp of papaya with a tsp of honey and 1 egg white. Leave the mixture on your face for about 15 minutes and enjoy the glow you get afterwards.

10. Cool your skin. Blending half a cucumber and 1 tbsp of yoghurt in the mixer can make another simple and effective homemade face pack. Apply this to your face for 15 minutes and feel completely pampered.

7 pains you should never ignore

You can’t let every ache, soreness or twinge worry you to the point you have your health care provider or local hospital on speed dial. But there are pains that come on suddenly or accompany fever that you should never ignore. Abby Cuffey of Woman’s Day and pain management specialist Dr. Houman Danesh of Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York explain how to recognize when some pains, even if they seem small, need immediate attention.

A sharp ache between your shoulder blades

Could be: A heart attack

About 30 percent of people who have heart attacks don’t get the classic chest pressure. Pain between shoulder blades is common in women, as is jaw pain, shortness of breath and nausea. If you have these symptoms (you’ll likely have more than one), you need care ASAP.

A muscle pain is like a dull ache. A heart attack is more like a sharp sudden onset. Call 911. Do not drive yourself to the hospital. It’s better not to have someone drive you to the hospital. Wait for the ambulance because they are set up to do triage immediately.

A ‘thunderclap’ headache

Could be: An aneurysm, which is a balloon-like area in an artery

Most of us have experienced mild or moderate headaches — usually an over the counter pain medication makes the pain go away. But if you have the worst headache of your life and it comes on suddenly, call 911. Again, do not drive the hospital yourself.

How do you know it isn’t a migraine? With a migraine, you feel nauseous, are sensitive to light and sound and it’s a gradual progression.

Bleeding in the brain due to a ruptured aneurysm isn’t all that common, but when it does happen, swift action is key. Surgeons can save your life by sealing off the weakened spot. If you aren’t treated right away, you could die. The biggest risk is, if it does rupture, and you are bleeding into your brain, it becomes difficult to treat, if it can be treated at all.

Don’t take aspirin for such a sudden, intense headache — it can increase the bleeding.

Dull stomach pain to the lower right of abdomen

Could be: Appendicitis

The pain usually starts at the center of your stomach and gradually moves to the right. If the appendix does rupture, that can be a dangerous complication, with bacteria bursting into your bloodstream and infecting your entire body. If you feel this sensation, go straight to the ER. (Usually it gets more intense over a 24-hour period as it shifts location.)

Usually with appendicitis, when pressing down on your stomach it doesn’t hurt as much as when you let go quickly. Another test is where you use the muscle underlying the gall bladder: Bring your knee to your head and have someone push down with resistance. If that hurts, that’s a sign of an irritated appendix, which would need to be evaluated further.

Tooth pain that wakes you up

Could be: Teeth grinding

Frequent clenching can cause the nerve within the tooth to become inflamed and the protective enamel to wear away. You might even end up cracking teeth down to the root, which leads to extraction. Call your dentist so he or she can figure out the problem. The complications from grinding, which is often brought on by stress, can be prevented by wearing a night guard

There are a lot of people who grind their teeth at night. At your annual checkup, your dentist can tell you if you need a night guard, for example, as an intervention.

Mid-back pain with fever

Could be: A kidney infection

Don’t assume that your temperature, nausea and back pain are just a stomach bug. This condition develops when bacteria that infiltrate the urinary tract spread to the kidneys, making the infection much more severe. You might start with urinary tract infection symptoms, like pain during urination, but some people don’t notice anything until later. You’ll likely need antibiotics ASAP, so call your doctor.

Women are more susceptible to getting UTIs, which is precursor to kidney infection. If a kidney infection is untreated, your kidneys can shut down. But it’s usually so painful, people don’t ignore it.

Menstrual cramps that don’t get better with medication

Could be: Endometriosis

If over-the-counter meds aren’t helping, this condition — in which the lining of the uterus grows somewhere else — might be to blame. Endometriosis impedes fertility, and it’s common. Forty percent to 60 percent of women whose periods are very painful may have it.

Unless you’re trying to conceive, your doctor can start you on oral contraceptives. If pain persists, you may need to have the tissue surgically removed.

A tender spot on your calf

Could be: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

If one small area of your leg is painful, you could have DVT, a blood clot in the deep veins. The spot may also be red and warm to the touch. DVT is more likely if you use birth control pills or recently took a long car or plane ride. Unless your leg is very swollen or the pain is getting worse rapidly, you can probably wait a day to see your doctor instead of going to the ER, but don’t delay any longer. The clot could increase in size or break off, move toward the lungs and stop blood flow.

It can go to your heart and give you a heart attack. It can go to your brain and give you a stroke.

As a preventive measure, if you’re on a long car ride or plane:

  • get up every 1 to 2 hours and stretch or move around.
  • write out the alphabet with your toes on the floor. Take your toes up and down, left to right. As you write the alphabet you squeeze the muscles, the veins, and pumping the blood back up, so it won’t clot.
  • drink fluids and stay hydrated.

6 Serious Medical Symptoms You Shouldn’t Ignore

Some medical symptoms are warnings that you need immediate care. Learn to recognize these six.

1. Paralysis of the arms or legs, tingling, numbness, confusion, dizziness, double vision, slurred speech, trouble finding words, or weakness, especially on one side of the face or body.

These are signs of stroke — or a “brain attack” — in which arteries that supply oxygen to the brain become blocked or rupture, causing brain tissue to die.

Symptoms depend on which area of the brain is involved. If a large blood vessel is blocked, a wide area may be affected, so a person may have paralysis on one side of the body and lose other functions, such as speech and understanding. If a smaller vessel is blocked, paralysis may remain limited to an arm or leg.

If you have symptoms, call 911 right away and get to an emergency room that offers clot-busting therapy for strokes due to blocked vessels. Such treatment, which dissolves clots in blocked vessels, needs to be given within the first three hours after symptoms begin, but newer treatments may work within a longer time frame, says Birge, who is medical director at the Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton, Ga.

Timing is urgent; fast treatment can potentially stop brain tissue death before permanent brain injury happens. “There is a time clock ticking as to when you might totally recover,” Birge tells WebMD.

2. Chest pain or discomfort; pain in the arm, jaw, or neck; breaking out in a cold sweat; extreme weakness; nausea; vomiting; feeling faint; or being short of breath.

These are signs of heart attack. If you get some of these symptoms, call 911 immediately and go to the emergency room by ambulance. Shulman and Birge also recommend that patients chew one regular, full-strength aspirin (unless they’re allergic to aspirin) to help prevent damage to the heart muscle during a heart attack.

Not everyone who has a heart attack feels chest pain or pressure or a sense of indigestion. Some people, especially women, the elderly, and people with diabetes, get “painless” heart attacks, the doctors say. Being aware of “painless” heart attack signs is crucial: a very weak feeling, sudden dizziness, a pounding heart, shortness of breath, heavy sweating, a feeling of impending doom, nausea, and vomiting.

Both doctors say that it’s important to learn heart attack signs and understand them in context. “Everybody has jaw pain. You don’t immediately run and say, ‘I’ve got a heart attack,'” Shulman tells WebMD. He is an associate professor of internal medicine at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. “But if you’re also sweating and you have some of these other symptoms — shortness of breath and so forth — then that’s going to tip you off that there’s something much more serious happening.”

3. Tenderness and pain in the back of your lower leg, chest pain, shortness of breath, or coughing up blood.

These are symptoms of a potentially dangerous blood clot in your leg, especially if they come after you’ve been sitting for a long time, such as on an airplane or during a long car trip. These signs can also surface if you’ve been bedridden after surgery.

“Anybody is susceptible, ” Birge says. He adds that such blood clots are more common than most people and doctors realize.

Blood is more likely to pool in your legs when you’re sitting or lying down for long periods of time, as opposed to standing and walking. If a blood clot forms in your leg as a result, your calf can feel swollen, painful, and tender to the touch; you should be evaluated. If you get sudden chest pain or shortness of breath, a piece of the blood clot may have broken off and traveled through the bloodstream to your lungs. This condition can be life-threatening, so get to an emergency room without delay.

4. Blood in the urine without accompanying pain.

Anytime you see blood in your urine, call your doctor promptly, even if you have no pain.

Kidney stones or a bladder or prostate infection are common causes of blood in the urine. But these problems are usually painful or uncomfortable, which sends people to the doctor promptly.

In contrast, when people see blood in their urine but feel no pain, some take a “wait and see” approach, especially if they just have one episode. “But you can’t have this attitude,” Shulman says. Lack of pain doesn’t necessarily mean lack of seriousness.

Cancer of the kidney, ureter, bladder, or prostate can cause bleeding into the urinary tract; when these cancers are small enough to be curable, they may not cause pain. So don’t dismiss this important sign because, according to Shulman and Birge, “blood in the urine may be the only clue for an early diagnosis.”

5. Asthma symptoms that don’t improve or get worse.

Asthma attacks are marked by wheezing or difficulty breathing. When an attack doesn’t improve or worsens, a patient should get emergency care.

If an asthma attack is left untreated, it can lead to severe chest muscle fatigue and death, say Shulman and Birge. Some people with persistent asthma hesitate to go to the emergency room because they’ve gone so many times before, or they need someone to drive them because they’re too short of breath. So instead of seeking care, “They try to hang in there,” Birge says, even if they need higher doses of inhalants or have decreasing lung function measurements when using a device to measure how well they move air out of their lungs.

Because asthma makes breathing difficult, the muscles for breathing may tire and the volume of air exchanged by the lungs will decrease. As a result, a person’s oxygen level drops while blood levels of carbon dioxide rise. As Birge and Shulman explain in their book, “A carbon dioxide buildup in the blood has a sedating effect on the brain, which may cause you to feel even drowsier. You may lose the motivation or energy to breathe.”

“A person with asthma who seems to be relaxing more, who seems to not be struggling for breath anymore — even though they’ve been at it for six or eight hours — may actually be worse. It could be a sign of respiratory fatigue,” Birge says. Eventually, the person could stop breathing.

“They’re really in a big danger zone,” Shulman adds. Patients believe they’re getting better when they’re actually getting worse, he says. “They become sedated and seem to be peaceful when actually, they’re dying.”

One of the most important considerations is how long an attack lasts, according to both doctors. “If you’ve been having labored respirations with the asthma not relenting after a period of several hours, even though you may be apparently doing OK, don’t let it go any longer,” Birge says. “Get on to the emergency room.”

6. Depression and suicidal thoughts.

Few people would put up with crushing chest pain or extreme shortness of breath, but many endure depression, even though at its extreme it can be life-threatening.

“Depression can be a very, very serious problem because people can commit suicide,” Shulman says. “Some people will not seek care when they are depressed because they think that they’ll be perceived as being crazy or not strong or not manly, and they have to understand that there is a chemical imbalance going on in their brain. It is a disease just like any other disease.”

Symptoms of depression include sadness, fatigue, apathy, anxiety, changes in sleep habits, and loss of appetite. Depression can be treated with medications and psychotherapy.

Frizzy hair? Blame it on the humidity. Limp hair? It’s excess moisture content again. There’s plenty of reasons to dread the monsoon. But we tell you how to prepare for those rainy days so that your locks look their best.

Fussy frizz

If you have dry hair, the open cuticles on your hair shaft will absorb the moisture from the air and make your locks frizzier and difficult to tame. Your hair looks unkempt, untidy and unhealthy. Plus, flyaways are impossible to control.

What to do: Fight the frizz by protecting your hair from humidity and heat. Make anti-frizz your best friend. Stock your shelf with anti-frizz products — shampoo, conditioner and serum or a leave-in conditioner, if that works better for you. Don’t wash your hair too often, as this will strip it of its natural oils. Avoid rubbing your hair; dab it with a towel to remove the extra water. Heat is your hair’s worst enemy as it will open up your hair cuticles even more. So ensure that at least the last rinse after a wash — particularly mid-length onwards — is with cold water. Let your hair air-dry if possible, or if you need to use a dryer, use it on the “cool” setting. “An ionic dryer is better as it helps to compress the hair cuticles, thus keeping out the frizz-inducing moisture,” advises Vidya Tikari, make-up expert. Ironing is a complete no-no. If you must, always use a heat protecting product. Choose a wide-toothed comb to smooth your tresses.

Irksome infections

A damp scalp is the ideal breeding ground for fungal and bacterial scalp infections. If you have an oily scalp you need to be wary of infections such as boils, excessive scaling, itchiness and dandruff.

What to do: “Keep your scalp absolutely clean, even if that means washing it more often,” says Dr Gulshant Panesar, consultant dermatologist. Never tie up wet hair; the dampness combined with sweat and dirt will lead to infections. Dry your hair thoroughly. If you do contract a scalp infection, use a medicated shampoo with ketoconazole or ZPTO but it would also be a good idea to visit a dermatologist or a trichologist.

Limp and lifeless

If you have an oily scalp, the humidity will make your hair limp and lifeless resulting in hair that lacks bounce and shine, and looks unhealthy.

What to do: Use a volumising shampoo and conditioner. Don’t use a creamy, moisturising conditioner, warns Natasha Sara, hair expert. Go for a layered cut to increase the volume. Use only non-greasy, lightweight styling products to avoid your hair weighing down.

Neem power

“Add two handfuls of neem leaves to four cups of hot water. Let it stand overnight. Next morning, strain the liquid and use it to rinse your hair. It relieves itching and keeps your scalp healthy and free from infections. Neem also helps in fighting dandruff. You can also make a paste of the soaked neem leaves and apply it to your scalp. “Rinse off after half an hour,” advises Husain. Oil is often a suggested remedy for an itchy scalp but if you have an infection, do not oil your hair as it can spread the infection.

Identify enemy no. 1
Sizzling-hot styling tools top the list of hair damage culprits says George Gonzalez, owner of George the salon in Chicago. “For example, people often put their blow dryer directly against the hair because they think that’s the way to get it straight,” says the celebrity stylist, who spent a decade working behind-the-scenes at Oprah Winfrey’s HARPO Studios. “That can do real damage.” 

The higher the heat, the more likely the proteins that make up hair will weaken, leading to split ends and other breakage. The simplest solution (aside from jettisoning your dryers, curlers and flatirons)? Keep temps under 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Doing so could make a tremendous difference in the long-term health of your hair, so experiment with using the lowest possible heat setting that still gets the job done.

Mend your split ends scientifically
Worry that scissors are the only solution to split ends? There are now professional remedies that can repair them. Brazilian Blowout’s in-salon Split End Repair Treatment, for example, mends and seals broken hair fibers back together using amino acids. “It’s a really quick service, and anybody can get it,” explains the brand’s international artistic director Tyler True of the 10-minute process that costs between $20 and $30 and can last up to four weeks. “The treatments add a certain density to the ends, so it appears that you just got a fresh cut.”

Be pig-headed about brushing
The hairbrush you’re using might be a secret source of hair damage. “I recommend round natural boar brushes and a small to medium size paddle brush when styling,” says  Giles Robinson, director of training and education for Color Wow and senior hair stylist at John Frieda. Not only are the flexible bristles less likely to tug and break strands, their porous nature holds onto your own protective oils, distributing minute amounts through hair as you brush. The result? “Boar bristles really add shine. You will be amazed when you switch over. Just the act of brushing makes your hair feel better.”

Make your waves do the work
As sexy as they are simple, beach waves are one of the perks of warmer weather, and getting them couldn’t be easier — no trip to the seashore required. Just mist towel-dried hair with a DIY salt spray, scrunch strands and dry allow to dry naturally.
